Comet 103P was first discovered by Malcolm Hartley at the Siding Spring Observatory in southeastern Australia on plates taken with the U.K. Schmidt Telscope on 1986 Mar. 15, 17, and 20 (cf. IAUC 4197; old-style designation 1986c = 1985 V; the name "Hartley 2" was in widespread use until 1995, when the new designation scheme made the numerals in comet names unnecessary); the comet was moving slowly northwestward near the border of the constellations Leo and Crater. Hartley noted a faint tail and gave the magnitude as about 17-18; it was already well past perihelion.
Additional astrometry soon showed that the comet had an orbital period around 6.26 years; it was observed to return to perihelion again on 1991 Sept. 11, 1997 Dec. 22, and 2004 May 17, prior to its current (fifth) observed "apparition" -- the orbital period slowly increasing now to just under 6.5 years. The comet was well-placed for observation at its 1991 and 1997 returns, peaking near total visual magnitude 8 during both returns.
The Deep Impact spacecraft that flew by comet 9P/Tempel in 2005 was renamed EPOXI for a new mission to fly by comet 103P on 2010 Nov. 4.
