Comet 360P/2017 S1 = 360P/2010 P4 (WISE)

Discovery

This comet was reported by Amy Mainzer (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) after discovery on images obatined on 2010 Aug. 6.6 UT in images obtained with the WISE satellite; the comet showed a tail extending at least about 150" toward the southwest. Ground-based CCD astrometrists at three observatories have failed to find cometary appearance, and noted the object's magnitude to be 21.3-21.9 during Aug. 11-16. Further details were given with the announcement on IAUC 9161, when it was reported as being a short-period comet with the designation P/2010 P4.

When the comet was recovered by E. Schwab (Egelsbach, Germany) on CCD images taken on 2017 Sept. 20.1 UT by D. Abreu with a 1.0-m f/4.4 reflector at the European Space Agency's Optical Ground Station at Tenerife, Canary Islands, the comet showed no coma and no visible tail on a frame with a total exposure time of 600 s. Schwab obtained follow-up images on Sept. 20.9 with an 0.8-m f/3 Schmidt telescope at Calar Alto. The indicated correction to the prediction by G. V. Williams on MPC 89017 is Δ(T) = +0.15 day; the indicated correction to the prediction by S. Nakano in the ICQ's 2017 Comet Handbook is Δ(T) = +0.08 day.

The recovery details were announced on CBET 4429.
